| Profile - Thomas J. Hanrahan |
Thomas J. Hanrahan is one of just 40 Accredited Business and
Commercial Mediators by the New Jersey Association of
Professional Mediators, NJAPM. Currently, he mediates
charges of discrimination as an EEOC contract mediator; he is
also included on the Roster of Court Approved Mediators in
Civil, General Equity and Probate Matters (and a mentor for
this program); an approved mediator for the NASD, including
the employment panel; and on the Roster of Mediators for the
Port of NY/NJ. He has served as a pro bono mediator for the
Superior Court of New Jersey, Bergen Vicinage, CDR Program.
So far, he has participated in more than 100 mediations
which have involved employment issues such as discrimination,
wrongful termination; and divorce; customer/ broker
complaints; contract and collection cases; business partner
breakups and other commercial transactions.
Tom is an attorney in private practice, admitted in New York
and New Jersey, and has extensive experience in the fields
of securities and business disputes as an advocate, arbitrator
and mediator.
His early career was at law firms specializing in admiralty
law. In 1976, he became associated with the law department
of Merrill Lynch and became an Assistant V.P. and Counsel.
In 1985, he became V.P. for Compliance at ELAFUND, a
subsidiary of Equitable Life. In 1986, he established a private
practice.
Since 1985, Mr. Hanrahan has demonstrated neutrality and
fairness as well as the ability to direct proceedings as an
arbitrator for the NASD, NYSE, and NFA, many as chairman.
(These are all investment related organizations. However,
the issues presented often involve many other fields such as
contracts and employment issues which are common to all
businesses.) In addition, he is sole arbitrator for ceratin
construction industry disputes between unions and
contractors regarding wages, terminations and contributions
to welfare and pension funds. The bulk of his practice is in an
arbitration forum and he conducts arbitration hearings as an
arbitrator 5-10 times a year. In addition, Tom has mediated
over 100 disputes in the last seven years.
Tom Hanrahan first became an arbitrator in 1985. In 1987,
he received a Distinguished Service Award from the NASD.
In 1997, he was chosen by the NFA to chair the single largest
monetary award sought to date (Republic New York Securities
Corp. vs. Hussain was upheld by court in contested
confirmation petition.) He is on the roster of arbitrators
for the Superior Court in Bergen, Passaic and Morris
Counties.
Tom has successfully completed the "Seminar in Civil
Mediation" at the Institute for Dispute Resolution of Seton
Hall Law School (1997); "Advance Mediator Skills Course"
(1998); and an EEOC Employment Mediation Alternative
Resolution program (2002); Training in a 40 hour course in
"Mediation Training: Family Law Cases" given by ICLE
(2004). In addition, as a member of NJAPM, he regularly
attends continuing education courses in mediation and in
legal subjects.
Mr. Hanrahan has published "Mediation Can Help Resolve
Many Business Disputes" (Summer, 2003 Commerce
Magazine) and "Mediation: Time-Money Saver in Business"
(Mediate.com). In September, 2004 he was a panelist for
the Human Resources Section of the Commerce and Industry
Association of N.J. program Mediation: The Path to Good
Relations.
He is a member of the New Jersey State Bar Association,
Dispute Resolution Section (Liaison to Securities Law);
the Board of Directors of NJAPM and Chair the
Accreditation Committee. |
